Message from ANUSA President Phoenix O'Neill

Dear all,

I hope you’re all doing well and that exam season is going well for everybody. There has been a lot of movement on campus this week.

First, on Monday May 27th, Reconciliation Day, the ANU Gaza Solidarity encampment were given orders to move on by the University and by the police. You can see ANUSA’s statement on this here. The encampment has now moved. I want to reiterate that police presence on campus is intimidating, unsafe and affects wellbeing of students involved for students and that ANUSA does not support this decision.

Second, the ANU Council will be considering undertaking a review of the Socially Responsible Investment Policy on 14 June 2024. You can see ANUSA’s statement on this, and more context on what that means, here

For context, I am both the ANUSA President and, separately, the Undergraduate Member on ANU Council (UMAC). As UMAC, I requested that we review this policy at Council. This review is as a result of student pressure. It’s clear that the ethics represented in the policy are not up to date with our values as a community today, and a review could bring this up to date. It is not a promise of divestment. There is still work to be done and ANUSA continues to push for full divestment from companies who are connected with provisions of military goods and services to the Israeli military. The University should still engage with the students on their demands and this should not be the end of the conversation. However, I celebrate the step forward and will be working hard to make sure that community consultation will be a part of this review.

Teen Danny Clarke wants only two things: a Jaguar and a date with Joanna Johnson, the prettiest girl in his high school. Unfortunately  his scheme to get both by trading in the Nissan his parents gave him and impressing Joanna with a Jaguar XJ6 doesn’t exactly go to plan.
