International Students Department

The Australian National University International Students’ Department (ISD) is the university’s peak student-led representative body for international students. ISD is run by students and is not part of ANU’s Administrative Division.

Our mission is to communicate effectively with stakeholders through a system of information exchange and feedback, to be accountable and transparent to our community, to foster integration within and between different groups of our community and to increase engagement and interaction with our community, resulting in a greater presence. Throughout the year, we will be putting on a variety of events to achieve our aim. We will be putting on workshops on different topics for you to familiarise with Australian systems of, for example, employment. We also provide opportunities for you to create networks with other international students, through more social events.

Winson Widarto

One thing I would really be working on to advocate in the year 2017 is to ensure new international students arriving in the second semester can have a guaranteed residential accommodation upon application.

The nature of ISD is to advocate for international students, however, during the past few years ISD’s purpose has been changing and I believe that, although advocating for student is still playing a big part in ISD, we should not be merely focusing on it anymore.  I see the potential of ISD acting as the strong blending platform to promote multiculturalism among ANU. ISD has the resources, abilities and connections to organise large-scale inclusive events to allow all national clubs and societies to get together and promote their own culture. As a result, ISD ultimately fosters the cultural exchange and provides a harmonious international community within ANU.

This is the approach ISD 2017 will be undertaking and I am excited to see what we can achieve in the year 2017.
