ANUSA Statement on the Resignation of Chancellor Julie Bishop

The Chancellor of the ANU, Julie Bishop, has resigned from her position.

The Australian National University is an institution that should be heralded as the best university in the country. We are an institution where students travel from across the country and around the world, to be challenged to think and to find solutions to some of society’s hardest questions.

Over the past two years - we have strayed far from that vision.

The past two years have been among the darkest in the University’s history.

Time and time again we have seen our university leadership fail our community. We have seen poor financial management, a toxic culture of top-down corporate managerialism, and a culture of secrecy run rife through an institution that should embody the highest standards of community-centric governance.

The ANU has significantly suffered. We have lost world-class researchers and staff. We have fundamentally lost our way as the national university of Australia.

The resignation of the Chancellor is a welcome indication that things are changing and a small sign of hope for the future of the ANU.

The community needs honesty, needs accountability, and needs a direction that they can trust.

How we as a community navigate the next 12 months are vitally important to what the following decades look like for the ANU.

What we must do is look back at the past two years with honesty and look at the true extent to which RenewANU has hurt the ANU.

The ANU will continue to face significant challenges over the next few months as we await the findings of several reports into governance at the ANU.

At every step, ANUSA will be holding leadership to account, calling out toxic governance, and pushing for a university that is founded upon its core duties - to represent the community that has built this institution, and to cement our place as the national university.

ANUSA will always fight for the education that you deserve.

Volunteer with ANUSA

Want to get involved on campus? We’ve launched a new Facebook group called Volunteer with ANUSA, which will serve as a central hub for students to find volunteer opportunities across ANUSA events and services, including O-Week, Bush Week, Night Markets, the Union Pantry, and more. ANUSA will use the group to post updates whenever volunteers are needed, making it easy to get involved and stay in the loop. As an added bonus, all volunteering with ANUSA can count towards your ANU+ hours, so be sure to join the group and keep an eye out for upcoming opportunities.
