The ANU Queer* Department represents and advocates for all LGBTQIASB+ students at ANU. This includes, but is not limited to, students identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual/biromantic, transgender, intersex, asexual/aromantic, brotherboy, sistergirl, non-binary, gender-diverse, pansexual/panromantic, polysexual/polyromantic, and questioning. 

Get Involved & Access Support

All queer students are automatically members of the Department. Here’s how you can get involved:

• Autonomous Space: Visit our autonomous student space – the Queer* Space – in the Copland Building (24 Kingsley Place) for relaxing, making friends, studying, or having a cup of tea or coffee between classes. You can request student card access to the space using this form. Check out our Linktree for more information, including opening hours and instructions on how to get to the space. 
• Meetings & Events: Join our fortnightly collective meetings (fortnightly during the semester at 6pm on even Mondays – weeks 2, 4, 6, etc.) or attend our regular social events including coffee catchups and reading groups.
• Gender Affirming Gear: We offer free gender-affirming gear (binders, bra inserts, packing gear, and tucking underwear) to support trans and gender-diverse students.
• Other Ways to Contribute: Join working groups for our Queerphobia Reports and Queer* Ball, and contribute your art or written works to our Queer* Zine.

Advocacy & Creative Projects

Depending on capacity, we lead key initiatives including:

• Queerphobia Reports: Our reports into students’ experiences of LGBTQIASB+ discrimination at ANU, providing key findings and recommendations to the University to address LGBTQIASB+ discrimination on campus. Read the 2025 Report here.
• Queer* Zine: Our zine for queer students to share and appreciate the diverse creative works of our community. View the 2023 Zine here.

• Queer* Ball: The biggest night of the Queer* Department social calendar, celebrating the ANU queer community and fundraising for charity.

Allies are also welcome to participate in our specific campaigns to foster campus-wide support and inclusion.
