ANU Indigenous Department
What is the Indigenous Department?
The Indigenous Department provides services for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at ANU. It advocates for a sense of purpose, cultural pride, the exchange of ideas between Indigenous students, and the sharing of information between our mob and the wider ANU community.
All Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who study at the ANU are automatically members of the department!
What does the Indigenous Department do?
The Indigenous Department runs events and activities for students, and engages in advocacy on issues affecting First Nations people at ANU and in the wider community!
Activities and events include fortnightly coffee catchups, where mob have the chance to sit down and have a yarn. Our fortnightly departmental meetings allow mob to come together, discuss upcoming events, changes to the department’s constitution and vote for the department’s executive at the end of year AGM.
How do I get involved?
Follow our socials! This is where the department posts upcoming events, advocacy and important resources for mob at ANU!
Go to advertised events! Going to a department meeting or a coffee-catchup goes a long way in getting involved in the Indigenous Department as it’s a chance to meet fellow First Nations students and be in a culturally safe space.

Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre
The Indigenous Department works alongside the Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre. Tjabal provides services and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, including pathway programs and tutoring services. The Tjabal Centre is a meeting base available for all Indigenous students, as well as after opening hours. To get card access, please email tjabal.centre@anu.edu.au or the Indigenous Officer.
We are incredibly grateful for all that Tjabal has done for the Indigenous Department and the Indigenous students at ANU, and the consistent hard work put in to ensure each and every Indigenous student is getting the most out of university.
